Cigar Review: Categorizing Cigar by Size and Shape

Cigars is often grouped using their size and shape. This is the commonest techniques that a cigar review apply to evaluate one cigar from the other. This may look so straight forward but it is often too puzzling the idea that there are thousands of cigars out there.

Over many years, the cigar industry has been employing the names Corona and Panatela that indicates the rough length and width of the cigar and not the brand or manufacturer. While a lot of cigar makers use the regularly accepted size names to describe their cigars, the particular size of the specific named cigar may differ among manufacturers.

At present, cigars are available in a big range of dimensions that were not available in the past. Furthermore, many manufacturers have manufactured their own names for specific cigar sizes. With that being said, it is not surprising to find 2 cigars with the same size manufactured by different companies, to have different names to describe their size. So this means that cigar buyers extremely need to grasp the variance between cigars in order to perfectly identify one from the other. This is the reason cigar reviews are necessary in order to provide accurate information about the different types of cigars.

This could become complicated but to clear that up, it will be more convenient to identify the cigar’s length and width to describe its size. Usually, the length is measured in inches while width is measured by ring gauge (the diameter expressed in 64ths of an inch). Each one of these inconsistencies regarding cigar names can end up one into chaos as to which cigar to pick. In the long run, it is more effective to describe the different sizes and shapes of cigars by name rather than by numbers.

When it comes to cigar shapes, several of them are shaped like a cylinder. This is why they are considered as having a ‘parejo’ shape. Cigars having irregular shape or have cone shaped heads are usually called a ‘figurado’.  Technically, the term used to describe both size and shape of cigars is ‘vitola’.
